26A- Celebrating Failure

1) One time I have failed this semester is when I did not declare two assignments in this class, even though I finished the assignment. It was very upsetting because I did all the work for it but those two assignment declarations brought my grade down.

2) Thankfully, I still have an A in this class but ever since that incident I have been very diligent in making sure I declare my assignments after I have completed them. It is very upsetting to lose points for something you worked so hard on.

3) To be honest, I don't handle failure too well. It is definitely something I need to work on. I attribute it to my lack of patience and excessive pride and confidence when I do things. For the most part, I always expect things to go the way I want and when they don't I become very disappointed. However, as I've entered college and endured some of the challenges that have come my way at UF, I have learned that failure is a normal thing and you can't let one failure set you back on your goals. Instead, you should use it to work harder on achieving your goals. This class has changed my perspective in failure because it emphasized that in your business plan, you will have to go through several failures until you are able to overcome them and finalize your product. In terms of taking risks in business, I would only do it if I had a substantial amount of money, however i would not put in everything I have for something that might not work out.

  1. Sara,

Great post! I understand how frustrating that could be earning a zero instead of partial credit for the assignments that you submit but forgot to declare. However, I am happy that you learned from this mistake and made sure you declared all of your assignments after completing them as it did not prevent you from earning an A in the course.

  2. Hi Sara,

I feel you for sure! Because I've done the exactly same thing before and it stings so bad! I felt so accomplished thinking that I did everything right, and then I wrote reviews for others just as usual. And then, I got an email saying all my work is invalidated because I didn't declare. I actually suggested an idea to Prof. Pryor that he shouldn't allow the canvas system to move on to declare/and review unless you share the url first. He say he's thinking about doing it for the next semester.

  3. Sara,
I can definitely relate to this as well! I did not do the exact same thing, but I wrote all of my peer reviews for the week and then forgot to declare them. It was definitely frustrating as you described. I can also relate to taking failure hard. I am a perfectionist and am really hard on myself when I fail. Glad your mistake didn't cost you your A!

  4. Hey Sara,

It’s awesome that you could overcome those early failures, it must’ve sucked to lose points only because you didn’t declare them. It’s also great to see that you identified that you struggle with failure and will try to work on accepting it.

  5. Ah I can understand where you're coming from. This class gives you every opportunity at an A and I definitely blew my chance by not declaring a lot more assignments than just 2. I think you learned from them and did not falter after the 2 you missed. I should have done what you have done and realized my mistakes early on.
